Solutions

Circular solutions in event catering and communal catering are part of the range of services offered by PAPSTAR Solutions GmbH. The company provides consulting services and takes care of the supply of goods made from renewable raw materials as well as cycle-oriented material flow management.

Serving Solutions

The ecological challenges of our time are extensive: PAPSTAR sets a good example and accompanies the entire life cycle of its products. The company no longer sees itself ‘only’ as a distributor of disposable products made from renewable raw materials that are valuable from a hygiene and safety perspective, but also takes care of material recycling after use.

The range comprises over 5,000 consumables from more than 200 production facilities (including three within the company's own group), covering the categories of disposable tableware and service packaging, table top and room decoration, as well as products for the home, kitchen, care and hygiene.

Europe-wide logistics and service concepts ensure the permanent availability of the entire product range.

Recycling cycles

Excellent solutions

In order to achieve climate targets, the recycling of raw materials in circular economies is a necessary condition and task for all economic actors. Consumers are also increasingly demanding sustainable solutions – for example, in the context of communal and event catering.

To date, single-use products made from renewable raw materials have been disposed of in incinerators after use, even though they offer excellent solutions for creating recycling loops.

Recycling strategies and a focus on the circular economy

PAPSTAR Solutions GmbH was established in 2019 as a spin-off to implement a circular materials management system. Its core mission is the ongoing development and organisation of recycling loops and the consistent supply of secondary raw materials.

Hygiene Standards and other contributing factors

We need to take a holistic view that goes beyond the boundaries of individual systems and companies. This involves not only raw materials, hygiene and the risk of injury, but also energy, water, logistics costs, waste disposal and staff deployment. Only when all these factors have been taken into account is it possible to make an assessment.

Material flow concepts for various types of material

Different material flow management approaches are required depending on the type of material used in the products. According to studies (Ramboll: Life Cycle Assessment “Single-use vs. Reusable”), single-use packaging made from renewable raw materials can perform better than reusable solutions in many areas.

"Zero Waste - Pure Pleasure" for events and communal catering

The solution for event catering tableware was developed using the following service modules: consultancy, cost of goods, circular economy and recycling, and communication. This makes sustainable catering possible without leaving behind waste from crockery and cutlery.

Innovation award and sustainability award

‘From sustainable products to optimal waste management solutions, the company operates a new business division through PAPSTAR Solutions GmbH that is unique in Germany in this form. The Rhineland thrives on stars like PAPSTAR.’ (Official jury verdict for ‘Rheinland Genial‘ - Metropolregion Rheinland e.V.)

Further awards:

  • AC² Innovation Award, Aachen Region 2023
  • Sustainability Award from the Aachen Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK Aachen), 2023

Oklin Bio converter

Composting machines (Oklin brand bio-converters) – for which PAPSTAR Solutions GmbH holds the exclusive distribution rights in Germany – utilise microbiological technologies within a sealed chamber.

In this way, organic waste or disposable tableware made from renewable raw materials is broken down via fibre extraction, reducing the volume by up to 90 per cent within 24 hours. The secondary raw material obtained in this way is processed into cardboard for use in industry.

Event concept

The ‘Zero Waste – Pure Pleasure’ event concept is specifically tailored to the increasingly complex sustainability requirements facing catering companies and institutional catering.

Event waste is collected separately as residual waste and products made from renewable raw materials. Disposable tableware made from renewable raw materials is not only recyclable but is returned to the recycling cycle, providing a secondary raw material.

Corn cup recycling

PLA (polylactide) is a material made from renewable raw materials (corn starch) and is fully recyclable. Visually, the cups are indistinguishable from conventional plastic cups.

The recycling system provided by PAPSTAR Solutions GmbH is seeing increasing demand for hygiene reasons. The recovered PLA granulate can be used to manufacture other bio-based plastics.

Paper Cup Recycling

The ‘paper cup’, made from FSC®-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) virgin fibre cardboard, requires no coating and is therefore ideal for paper recycling.

Paper fibres can be recycled ten to 25 times. Recycled paper is used to make magazines and newspapers, exercise books, printer paper and a wide variety of packaging materials such as cardboard.
